SRFDCL is planning to develop water sports facilities by building a second barrage on the Sabarmati at the cost of Rs 16 crore.
AHMEDABAD: The closest Amdavadis have ever come to doing water sports in the city, is taking a dull boat ride at the Kankaria or Vastrapur lake. But that could change with the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) planning to develop water sports facilities by building a second barrage on the Sabarmati at the cost of Rs 16 crore.
The barrage had earlier been planned on the stretch of river passing by Kotarpur, just 2.5 km from the Narmada Canal. But it is now going to be constructed on the stretch in Duffnala, about 9.5 km from the canal. The idea is to not only harness river water to create a clean water body for developing water sports facilities, but more importantly, to spruce development along the northern stretch of the riverfront project which has remained neglected so far.
Until now, the focus has been on developing the riverfront between Subhash Bridge and Vasna Barrage, with work on building walkways on either side of the river underway. "The creation of a water body after the construction of a barrage will boost development along the northern stretch too. So, we changed the original plan and are now constructing the barrage a little farther from the earlier site," says chairman of SRFDCL Anil Mukim.
The barrage will be smaller than the Vasna barrage, rising five metres from the river bed with a width of 396 m. The water level will be around three metres. The water, according to SRFDCL sources, will remain clean, as there are no drainage outfalls opening in the river in the northern stretch, which is barren and water coming from the canal is also clear. The design of the barrage has been sent to Central Design Organisation (CDO) in Gandhinagar for approval. That done, the tenders for the project will be issued and work could begin by June-end. Once it commences, the project will be completed in 18 months and is expected to be operational by December 2007. Sources say, the water body will also serve as an embellishment for the proposed Rs 100-crore convention centre, with the barrage enabling a permanent river-view. SRFDCL sources say that the barrage has also been taken farther to benefit the development anticipated in Koba behind Mother Dairy, where there is a possibility of the government permitting a private developer to build a township under its proposed 'township policy'.
